University of Tennessee
Campus Facilities Manager
The Student Union at the University of Tennessee is a multi-use facility that serves as a hub for meetings, dining, and the bookstore. With heavy foot traffic, it is kept in showcase condition by a well-trained staff using advanced cleaning methods, including Diamond Pad terrazzo floor maintenance, robotic machines, and the installation of Tork paper products.
What specific measures do you or your team implement to ensure this space meets the highest standards of cleanliness and embodies the value of clean?
All top administrators use this space for campus activities, so it is inspected daily and maintained from 8 a.m. to 1:30 a.m. every day.
How does cleaning this space contribute to the health and safety of those who use it?
All cleaning chemicals used are green, except for a Quaternary disinfectant used for lavatory cleaning. We also regularly utilize an electrostatic disinfectant system throughout the facility. Our crews are trained in red bag cleanup procedures and are fully equipped to respond to COVID-related situations. Additionally, we offer the Cleaning Certification Program, with many staff members being certified graduates.
As part of our sustainability efforts, the UT Recycles program processes materials such as cardboard and aluminum, which are baled directly at the Student Union. Food waste is collected and transported to the University’s compost site, further supporting our commitment to environmental responsibility.
What does having a spotless space mean to you and your team?
The number one reason students choose to attend a college or university is the appearance of its facilities. The Student Union is our showpiece!
