Benson High School: main lobby, common area/cafe, hallway, auditorium, secondary gym space with elevated running track.

What specific measures do you or your team implement to ensure this space meets the highest standards of cleanliness and embodies the value of clean?

These spaces are cleaned nightly. If the evening crew is short-staffed, they leave me a note, and as the Head Custodian, I personally check these areas every morning. Benson is a 368,805 sq. ft. building covered by three full-time evening custodians and one part-time custodian. With the large square footage and limited custodial staff, I implement a rotational cleaning process based on building usage and often use team cleaning strategies. I also collaborate with CTE teachers, who assist the custodial team by having students help maintain the CTE areas.

How does cleaning this space contribute to the health and safety of those who use it?

By keeping these spaces clean, we ensure that students and staff have a healthy, welcoming environment in which to learn. We use green-certified chemicals when diluted through the chem-stations. Additionally, we adhere to Oregon’s Menstrual Dignity Act (HB 3294, 2021), which mandates that public schools provide free menstrual products to all students. All spaces are also ADA compliant.

What does having a spotless space mean to you and your team?

Maintaining spotless areas is the goal I set for myself and my crew. While I know it’s not always possible, it’s what I continuously strive for. It instills a strong sense of pride in both me and my team. Taking pride in our work and striving to do our best makes the day go faster and fosters a positive atmosphere in the building. This positive environment sets the tone for the entire space, impacting staff, students, and any visitors who enter.
